Fun fact: Shields Library has more than 300 pieces of art on display.

“Floof” fact: Shields Library has an art collection dedicated to dogs!

Located on the lower level of Shields Library (next to the main staircase), the Fleetfield Gallery Dog Art Display features a rotating selection of dog-themed art and books donated by the Sheila Grant Fleetfield Dog Museum and Library.

Sheila Grant (1950-2017) was an animal behaviorist, professional dog handler and lifelong dog lover. The Fleetfield Gallery collection comprises mostly greyhounds and Afghan hounds, Grant’s favorite breed. The entire collection includes more than 500 pieces of art and hundreds of books from Grant’s massive library on dogs, dog training, and canine health.

The current selection on display includes fine art, kitsch, and everything in between:

  • Can you spot Santa’s Little Helper, the beloved Simpsons family dog? The gallery features a toy of the little greyhound that was part of a promotional giveaway with Burger King. Bart Simpson adopted Santa’s Little Helper in the premier episode of The Simpsons back in 1989.
  • Forget queens and presidents — in 1972 the nation of Hungary released a set of postage stamps featuring hounds. Can you find the stamp with the head of an Afghan Hound featured in this exhibit?

This iteration of the Fleetfield Gallery will be on display through summer 2026. Visit our online exhibit to learn more about Sheila Grant and view highlights in the larger collection.
