Shields Library is closed through January 1. Requests for books, digitization services, and interlibrary loan will be fulfilled after the new year.
Physical Sciences & Engineering Library Summer Closure
Construction activities at the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library (PSEL) related to the QMAP Renovations and Seismic Retrofit project will require the full closure of the facility during Summer 2019 (June 14-September 23).
The building will be closed to allow for asbestos abatement, the installation of fire sprinklers on the first floor and lower level, and duct-work in the first-floor lobby. Due to safety issues related to this work, the building will be inaccessible to all patrons and library personnel during this time.
- If you have a book checked out: The due date for books currently checked out from PSEL that would otherwise be due this summer have now been extended to September 23. Books may be returned to Shields Library during the closure.
- If you need a book: During the closure, library personnel will not have access to the print collections at PSEL. If you know you will need certain titles this summer, we encourage you to check them out by June 13. We are relocating key titles to another location so we can get to them — the library catalog will reflect their temporary locations — and we will provide access to other needed items from other UC library collections or via interlibrary loan as necessary. While we anticipate comparatively little demand on the collection during the Summer Sessions based on data from past years, we recognize that every need is important and will do our best to provide alternatives. During the summer, for help with items affected by the closure, please contact researchservices@ucdavis.edu (for reference) or psecirc@ucdavis.edu (for circulation).
We are keenly aware of the disruption this will cause to faculty, researchers and students, and have alerted the Deans and Department Chairs for the most directly impacted disciplines. If you have general questions regarding the temporary summer closure, please contact Rice Majors, Associate University Librarian for Scholarly Resources.
Based on the information we have received from campus Design and Construction Management, we anticipate that PSEL will reopen in time for the start of Fall Quarter 2019.
