Diversity

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Advancing Diversity and Inclusion in Libraries

The library’s strategic plan centers on creating and maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment for library users of all backgrounds and abilities. We are committed to supporting greater diversity in the library profession. We pursue opportunities to develop services, outreach and collections that embrace equity and reflect the diverse voices and life experiences of our campus, region and the world.

Elevating Diverse Voices and Scholarship

The library also works to elevate diverse voices and perspectives. We share the stories of people with disabilities and women, LGBTQ and BIPOC (Black, Indigneous, and People of Color) leaders and communities through our collections, exhibits and events, and instruction, and partner with other university departments to create new venues for scholarship about underrepresented communities.

Learning from the Past

The UC Davis Library stands as a witness and recorder of history, and endeavors to eliminate bias and systematic inequality through its services and resources. We invite you to explore our resources, collections and book recommendations. From those that celebrate diversity to those that record our failures to protect equal rights and freedoms for all, we believe it is important to document, study and learn from all pieces of the past so that we can take actions to create a more just and equitable future.

Diversifying the Library Profession

Diversity Residency Program

To advance diversity and equal opportunity in the library profession, we offer a two-year residency to provide mentorship and experience to individuals with the potential for leadership in addressing the barriers that have prevented individuals from traditionally underrepresented ethnic or racial minority groups, gender or gender identities, or physical or cognitive abilities from full participation in careers in academic librarianship.

Diversity Resources, Partnerships and News

Partnerships

Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies

The Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies Archivist — part of the library’s Archives and Special Collections team —  creates events, exhibits, and oral histories that celebrate and preserve Filipinx-American history and culture. The library also helped the Bulosan Center launch its journal Alon in 2021.

Center for African Diaspora Student Success (CADSS)

The library partners with CADSS to provide research and academic support for undergraduate and graduate students of African heritage. Student Services librarians work with CADSS staff to create culturally relevant events and programming, assisting students as they navigate their UC Davis experience.

El Centro

The library collaborates with the UC Davis Center for Chicanx and Latinx Academic Student Success (“El Centro”) to help Chicanx and Latinx students grow as scholars and develop their library research skills. Librarians offer help with navigating library databases, finding empirical research studies, and accessing resources for students’ research projects.
