Meet Library Intern Chelsea Momoh

In fall 2025 the library launched a paid internship program for undergraduates to gain professional experience while supporting library services. There are four undergraduate students in our inaugural 2025-26 cohort, and today we’re pleased to share an update from intern Chelsea Momoh.

Chelsea is working with Researcher Services Librarian Megan Van Noord and Scholarly Communications Officer Michael Ladisch on the library’s Scholarly Impact Service team to help analyze and communicate the significance of faculty scholarly works and publications.

Check back soon to hear from more of our interns!

Library Team: Scholarly Impact Service
Project: Impact of Open Access Publishing on Author Citation Metrics

What are you working on?

I’m using bibliometric databases, like Scopus, and ORCiD researcher records to understand how open access publishing affects authors’ citation counts. Often, these metrics are utilized by administrators and even contribute to university rankings.

I’ve worked with Python and applications like Tableau and OpenRefine to create several charts and complete smaller projects. I’m currently working to clean up author records. As a statistics major, I’ve sincerely enjoyed the opportunity to practice handling, analyzing, and visualizing complex bibliometric data.

Why did you apply for this internship?

I applied for this position to learn about real-world applications for the skills I have been working on outside of class. Last year, I spent a lot of time doing research and visualizations for the Davis Data Driven Change (D3C) club, which introduced me to new software and visualization techniques. The Scholarly Impact Service internship emerged as a great opportunity that would allow me to continue using data to have a positive impact on my campus.

What has your cohort experience been like?

Each Wednesday, I meet up with the other students in my cohort to share my experiences, tour areas of the library, and hear presentations from staff in Student Services, DataLab, and Scholarly Communications, to name a few. My favorite experiences in the cohort have been touring Archives and Special Collections and trying out a handful of data visualizations in the DataLab.

What’s next?

I’m most excited to hear more from the different library departments. Many librarians are primarily concerned with teaching researchers where to find learning materials, which requires them to stay on the cutting edge of several fields to help researchers with meaningful work. I’m honored and grateful to learn from them this year.
