Featured Maps! Archipelago
Theme for the week: Archipelago
July 9-27, 2018
Ever want to get away from all the stress of city life? We’ve gone through our map collection and listed some of the best island chains to escape to. We’ve got you covered if you want to relax on the beach in sunny Hawaii, or if you are fed up with the 100°F Davis days, you might want to experience the -40°F winters of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
Archipelagos are groups of islands that are isolated in the middle of a larger expanse of water; most likely in the middle of an ocean but they can also be found in the middle of a river or lake. Archipelagos can either be formed through volcanic activity or by tectonic displacement. The most common way that they are formed is by tectonic movement over a stationary hot spot which lies beneath the Earth’s crust. As the tectonic plates move across a hot spot beneath the Earth’s crust, a chain of islands form in a line, creating an archipelago. This is the way that the archipelago of Hawaii formed.
An interesting side effect of this type of island formation (stationary hot spot and moving tectonic plates) is that it allows us to see exactly how the tectonic plates have been moving for thousands, if not millions of years because the islands act as markers, with each island being created many years and many miles displaced from the island that was formed before it.
