History of this Collection
In 1962 the University of California purchased the library of Isaac Foot, containing 52,000 volumes and numerous manuscripts. Foot (1880-1960) served as an attorney (solicitor) in Plymouth, England; Labor member of Parliament; Secretary of Mines in the Labor Cabinet; and was an authority on Oliver Cromwell and president of the Cromwellian Society. The library was divided between several UC campuses (primarily UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside). UC Davis received over 12,000 books from the Foot Library, a portion of which were absorbed into the Blanchard Rare Book Collection.
