Open Access Fund to End on January 30, 2026
Funding Support through UC Open Access Publisher Agreements Remains Available
Like all campus units, the UC Davis Library is facing significant budget cuts. To help address the savings targets we have been assigned by campus, the library has made the difficult decision to discontinue supplemental support for open access publishing of journal articles through the UC Davis Library’s Open Access Fund at noon on January 30, 2026.
What’s changing
Until noon on January 30, 2026, the fund will continue to provide up to $1,000 towards the open access fee (typically known as the article processing charge, or APC) for articles by UC Davis authors published in fully open access journals not covered by one of the University of California’s system-level open access agreements. After noon (12pm PT) on January 30, 2026, the library will no longer offer this local funding support for open access publishing.
What’s not changing
It is important to note that UC’s systemwide open access publishing agreements for journal articles are unaffected by this change — and more than half of all articles by UC Davis corresponding authors are covered by one of these agreements. To check if a particular journal is covered and what level of funding is available, browse by publisher on our Open Access Publishing page or search by journal title using UC’s Journal Open Access Lookup Tool (JOLT).
Acknowledging the impact
We recognize that the library’s complementary Open Access Fund has been deeply valued by many UC Davis researchers who choose to publish open access, especially by those with limited or no access to external funding, such as early-career scholars and those working on non-grant-funded projects. Over the past five years since FY2019/20, the library’s Open Access Fund has supported over 1,400 articles by UC Davis authors.
We regret that budget pressures have forced us to take this step, and hope to resume offering this additional local funding for open access journal articles should philanthropic or other support for the program become available in the future.
