Visit the Shields Library Open House on Picnic Day
Join us Saturday, April 15, for family friendly activities and exhibits
UC Davis Picnic Day is only a few days away on Saturday, April 15! If you’re planning on visiting campus, we invite you to add Shields Library to your itinerary. We’re hosting an open house at Shields Library from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. that includes fun and relaxing activities — and a cool spot to take a break from a busy day.
Open House Activities, 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.
Story time (11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m.)
Gather round for children’s story time in the library courtyard. Picture books will be read by students from the UC Davis English department, led by graduate student Emily Masuda.
Historical Picnic Day films
Enjoy a cinematic celebration of Picnic Days past dating back to 1939!
Archives and Special Collections Exhibits
Enjoy our two latest exhibits! Explore the evolution of the UC Davis water tower in “Water Tower: History of a Campus Icon.” And learn about the role of UC Davis in the rise of organic farming, farm-to-table cooking, and sustainable agriculture in “Organic Activism, The Roots of the Northern California Food Movement.”
Coloring sheets and sidewalk chalk
Get creative with our Picnic Day-themed coloring sheets and a blank canvas for sidewalk chalk art in our Courtyard.
Data Science Exhibits: AR and VR with DataLab
Make mountains in DataLab’s Augmented Reality Sandbox and see what happens when it rains — or a volcano explodes (ages 6+). Then go on a virtual hike of your landscape in Virtual Reality (ages 13+). Learn about coding and coordinates as you draw and color alongside data scientists (all ages).
All activities will take place in the Shields Library lobby area and courtyard. We hope to see you Saturday!
