Course Reserves: Why, How and When to Set Up Reading Lists in Canvas

How do the library’s Course Reserves relate to the Equitable Access program spearheaded by the UC Davis Stores? In fact, Course Reserves works closely with Equitable Access to supply digital versions of materials that Equitable Access simply can’t provide.

  • Is the book out-of-print or available as print-only?
  • Is it a recommended title and not a required title?
  • Is it for a graduate or professional level course?
  • Is it a film or an article?
  • Or have some students in your class opted out of Equitable Access?

In any of these cases, the library is able to provide students with free, unlimited digital access to materials via the Course Reserves Reading List on the Canvas course site (and Elentra, for the School of Medicine).

Instructions for how to create a reading list, including adding items and submitting it to the library are online.

For undergraduate courses, we suggest that reading lists be submitted by the deadlines listed below in order to allow the library time to process your requests before classes begin. While many titles can made available immediately, others may require additional time for purchasing or digitization.

  • The second Friday of August for Fall Quarter
  • The second Friday of November for Winter Quarter
  • The second Friday of February for Spring Quarter
  • The second Friday of May for Summer Sessions

Deadlines for professional schools on the semester system or other academic calendar may vary. Generally, five weeks before the start of the term is a good guideline.

The Course Reserves team is currently accepting requests for Summer and Fall terms.

Course Reserves staff are available to help if you have any questions. We can provide guidance on how to create and update reading lists, reuse or save lists for future use, and more. For assistance, please contact coursereserves@ucdavis.edu or 530-752-2760, or stop by the Shields Library Circulation Desk.

  • For Course Reserves managed and housed at the Blaisdell Medical Library, please contact bmlres@ucdavis.edu to inquire about their reading list submissions process and material lending policies.
