As the new year begins, several of UC’s pilot open access agreements are up for renewal. Through each of these agreements, the university provides funding support to help authors make their scholarship freely available to people around the world. (See all agreements here.)
Funding support for open access publishing continues under UC’s standard model — an automatic $1,000 subsidy from the UC libraries for all authors who choose open access, and full funding for those authors who do not have research funds available to pay the remainder of the APC — with the following publishers:
UC’s agreement with Wiley has been renewed through December 31, 2026.
The pilot agreements with Canadian Science Publishing, The Company of Biologists, JMIR Publications and The Royal Society have been extended through January 31, 2024. We expect new agreements with all four publishers to be finalized in January.
Changes coming soon with PNAS
The National Academy of Sciences has recently changed their universal pricing structure. While PNAS no longer requires separate page charges in addition to open access fees, there is a flat publishing fee, and their standard article processing charges (APCs) for open access publishing have increased. As a result, costs will be slightly higher for both the libraries and authors under UC’s new agreement.
Details will be announced in the coming weeks, once the new agreement is finalized. Meanwhile, the terms of the prior agreement (a flat $3,000 open access fee, with no additional page charges) remain in place.
Open access publishing support ended for IEEE
As previously announced, the open access publishing portion of the IEEE agreement has now ended, due to low author participation. UC still has reading access to IEEE publications.
