Shields Library and Bookhead Win Again in The California Aggie’s Best of Davis Issue

Shields Library was voted once again the best place to study on campus in The California Aggie’s “Best of Davis 2018” issue. With its convenient location and wide variety of resources, Shields creates the optimal study environment for UC Davis students. The article mentions Shields’ ability to accommodate for different students’ needs by providing spaces for both individual and collaborative study.

Kerri Ritter, a second-year biochemistry major said, “I feel like all the common library-goers form a little community and I can always find someone to talk to when I need a mental breather.”

With finals approaching, the library aims to provide the best study environment for students during this stressful time. The library partners with the CoHo to bring coffee, tea and snacks directly to Shields for increased student convenience during the busy evening hours of finals week. Shields also recently extended its hours during finals week, offering a late night study spot for students: The entire building is open until 2am, and a portion of the second floor, including the Main Reading Room, will be open 24 hours a day during finals.

Another win in the “Best of Davis 2018” issue was the Bookhead statue in front of Shields. The Bookhead, which shows an Egghead with its nose buried in a book, can be interpreted in several different ways.

Camila Zaher, a fourth-year biological psychology major, thinks the Bookhead represents a feeling common to all students after a long night of studying – exhaustion.

Bookhead is often kissed or rubbed by students for good luck on exams, so don’t be surprised if you see students touching Bookhead’s bald head!
