Physical Sciences and Engineering Library to Remain Closed Until Summer 2020

The Physical Sciences and Engineering Library (PSEL), which has been temporarily closed since June 14 to allow for asbestos abatement and installation of fire sprinklers and fire alarms as part of the QMAP Renovations and Seismic Retrofit project, had been scheduled to reopen on September 23 in time for Fall Quarter.

However, we were recently informed that due to a number of unforeseen construction, inspection and permitting issues, the building must remain closed through Summer 2020.

• If you need a book: The library already relocated the most frequently used titles in the collection to Shields Library before the temporary closure began in June, and the library catalog reflects their current location. If we receive a request for a book that remains at PSEL, we will either borrow a copy from another library or purchase a new one. Either way, we are committed to getting you the materials you need. • If you have a book checked out: The due date for books currently checked out from PSEL has been extended to September 30, 2020. Books may be returned to Shields Library during the closure.
• Study space: When the construction project began a year ago, the library partnered with campus to add more seating at Shields Library. We were able to compensate for most of the study space lost at PSEL, and we continue to look for ways to support this ongoing student need.

We and the campus are keenly aware of the disruption this construction delay will cause, and are working closely together to minimize the inconvenience to faculty, researchers and students. The Provost has already alerted the Deans for the most directly impacted disciplines.
