Carlson Health Sciences Library closing as library user and study space on June 10

Carlson Health Sciences Library will close as a library user and study space as of June 10, 2022. Librarians who provide research, instructional and clinical support in veterinary medicine and public health will retain offices in the Carlson Health Sciences Library space within the Medical Sciences 1B building.

The change was prompted by the dramatic decline in use of the Carlson Health Sciences Library building and print collections over the past two decades, as library users increasingly access materials online.

Over time, the print collection will be gradually rehomed to Shields Library and the UC’s Northern Regional Library Facility. Throughout the transition and beyond, the library will continue to offer scanning and shipping services for Carlson Health Sciences Library print materials; requests can be placed through UC Library Search.

The change will also consolidate services like interlibrary loan into a single unit based at Shields Library, providing greater efficiency and continuity of service in responding to interlibrary loan requests. Library employees who support building operations will also be transferred to Shields.

Prior to implementing this change, the library formally consulted with the Academic Senate, and will continue dialogue with the School of Veterinary Medicine, in particular, to ensure that faculty, student and clinician needs for access to library collections and course materials are met.

The Office of the Provost will be considering options for future use of the building, including the rooms currently assigned for classroom use.

For more details, including whom to contact with questions, see our FAQ page about the consolidation of services and collections from the Carlson Health Sciences Library.
