The Effectiveness of Sex Education in Reducing Adolescent Birth Rates in Rural US Communities: A Scoping Review
Project Description and Impact
Guggenbickler examined the effectiveness of sex education interventions in U.S. rural communities, a frequently underrepresented population in public health research. Using scoping review methods, she synthesized decades of data across the fields of public health, education, rural sociology and nursing to identify programmatic elements associated with improved outcomes, including educator training, medically accurate curricula, community and parent engagement, and external partnerships. Guggenbickler’s review offers actionable evidence at local, county and state levels while advancing reproductive autonomy, educational equity and adolescent health.
