Gail Skoff is a distinguished photographer known for a range of techniques from hand coloring to photomontage. Much of her early work focuses on documenting food and wine culture in France and Italy; her agricultural turn to photographing vegetables emphasized a sensual style as represented in her signature black-and-white images. Skoff’s work has been integral to the Northern California food movement, her striking visuals adding impact within the pages of many cookbooks. She collaborated with Alice Waters, the first woman to be named Best Chef in America by the James Beard Foundation, with her photographs appearing in Chez Panisse Cooking (1988) and Lulu’s Provencal Table (1994). Skoff is also profiled in the book A Taste for Provence (2016). Her work is included in many collections including the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.
