Fourth-generation Yolo County farmer and UC Davis alumnus Richard Rominger dedicated his career to public service and agriculture at the local, state, and national levels. Admired for his passion for agriculture and commitment to helping students, Rominger was influential in agricultural land use, preservation issues, and organic standards in farming. The 6,000-acre Rominger family farm in Winters continues to produce sustainably grown farm products.

Rominger served as the director of the Yolo County Farm Bureau for twenty-five years and as the organization’s president from 1971-1973. He co-founded and served as founding president of the Yolo Land Trust and served on the board of the American Farmland Trust for several years. Rominger was also the chairman of the Yolo County Water Resources Board from 1971-1977. Rominger’s appointment as director of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (1977-1982) was followed by his appointment as the deputy secretary for the USDA (1993-2001). He was appointed to the Board of Regents of the University of California in 2004 and served on the California Roundtable on Agriculture. 

In 2016, Rominger and his wife Evelyne Rowe Rominger were both honored with the UC Davis Medal – the university’s highest honor – for their extraordinary service and financial support to the university. Rominger also received the California Farm Bureau Foundation's Distinguished Service Award and the California State Fair's Agriculturalist of the Year Award. 

The collection contains correspondence, clippings, budget papers, agendas, and meeting notes relating to Rominger's work with the Department of Food and Agriculture; files on pesticides, water appropriation, soil erosion, farm labor, and natural resources.
