Earthwork: Center for Food and Land was a collective that provided community education and mobilized campaigns pertaining to social, political, and economic issues regarding food production and distribution with an emphasis on cooperative management and direct connections between farmers and consumers. Based in San Francisco during the 1970s, Earthwork also provided printed information, reading and film resources, and organized groups and individuals to facilitate outreach and forward the organization’s goals. The center’s library included files from the San Francisco Food System, the Center for Rural Studies, and the National Coalition for Land Reform.
 
Eleanor McCallie Cooper, co-founder and former Executive Director of Earthwork, donated the collection. Cooper’s extensive travel after college influenced her perspective on the power of connecting people of different cultures. She discovered her strengths in community building and pivoted from her intended career as a classroom teacher to non-profits, eventually co-founding Earthwork with Isao Fujimoto in 1971.
 
The collection contains planning and organizational files and notes, newsletters, journals, and reports.
