Library Accounts and Borrowing Policy

A valid UC Davis Library account is required to borrow and renew materials and to place recalls or requests.

Library Account and Card Expectations

  • Borrowers should present their library card when conducting library transactions.
    • If unable to present their library card, a borrower may verify their identity using OASIS (students), UC Path (employees), or by presenting a valid government-issued photo ID.
    • If a borrower does not yet have a library card, or it has been lost or stolen, Circulation Desk staff can create a card for them.
  • Borrowers should immediately report lost or stolen library cards to the library.
  • Library privileges are not transferable. Only the individual named on a library account may use it. Borrowers are responsible for library material checked out to them until the material is returned and checked in at the library.
  • Keep your email and postal addresses up to date. This information can be updated at any library circulation desk or by using Update Addresses in your library My Account. The library assumes no responsibility for undeliverable or misdirected notices.
    • Non-receipt of notices due to an incorrect address may result in replacement bills and loss of library privileges.
    • The library does not automatically receive updated addresses from other campus units (e.g., Registrar).
  • Abuse of library privileges may result in loss of borrowing privileges. See Conduct Policies for more information.

Checkout and Care for Library Materials

  • Materials must be checked out before being taken out of the library, and returned undamaged and on time.
  • Materials should be returned in the same condition as they were borrowed. Material returned damaged may be billed for repair or replacement.
  • Archives and Special Collections, Reference materials, and any other materials designated as library-use only may not be removed from the library building.

Recalled Materials

Library materials that are on loan may be recalled at any time and must be returned directly to a UC Davis Library building.

Why are materials recalled?

The UC Davis Library collections benefit the research, teaching and learning needs of users across campus. To maximize access to these shared resources, all on-loan materials are subject to immediate recall by a library unit or library user.

Recall Due Dates

Recalled material will be due within one week of the date of the recall, regardless of the original assigned due date.

  • If the due date is already less than one week away, material must be received at the library by that date.
  • Recalled material must be received at the library to avoid billing or suspension of library privileges.
  • Borrowers who will be away from their mailing address for a week or more are advised to return library materials or make arrangements to ensure the prompt return of recalled materials.

Borrowers who fail to return recalled materials on time will be fined $5/day past due and have their library privileges suspended until the material is returned or the replacement bill and/or recall fines are paid in full.

Return Materials

All library items must be renewed or returned on or before their due date.

Materials not received by their due date may be subject to billing. User privileges may be suspended if materials are not returned on time.

  • The Library does not assume any risk for material not returned directly to a library building.
  • Materials returned to a remote book return, by mail, or at another UC campus may take several additional days to be received by the library, and are not considered returned until received and checked in at a UC Davis Library location.

Most materials can be returned at any UC Davis Library location, remote book return or by mail, with certain exceptions. The following materials cannot be returned at a remote book return.

  • Equipment must be returned directly to the library circulation desk from which they were borrowed.
  • Blaisdell Medical Library (BML) print course reserves must be returned to the BML Circulation Desk.
  • Interlibrary loan materials must be returned directly to the library building from which they were borrowed.
  • Recalled materials must be returned directly to a library building.
